I began working with 2015 when I started my training in Earth Medicine. My mentor encouraged us to connect with our animal guide and ask for a dismemberment. Vulture made herself known, and I began my work with cleaning, cleansing and clearing energy.

Beloved Vulture is probably one of the most under-appreciated and overlooked birds. With our pronounced disgust + fear response to death, Vultures have been demonized and killed throughout the world as a bad omen. And yet, Vulture remains a symbol of rebirth, purification, wisdom, and understanding in the myths around the world.

Vulture is technically a member of the raptor family. Unlike raptors, or birds that hunt like hawk, owl or eagle, vultures have weak talons and beaks. Vultures do not need to overpower or secure their prey. Since, they cannot kill for food, so they must rely on other species for killing for them. Vultures have many biological adaptations that make them well-suited to being scavengers. They have the amazing ability to see and use thermal energy rising from the earth, giving them lift for flight. In this way, they can conserve energy, rather than using it all for flapping wings. Most Vultures have excellent eyesight and a strong sense of smell. They use these keen senses to locate rotting carrion while they are soaring high over land. They can smell the gasses coming off dead animals from, possibly, as far away as five miles.

As a healer, I work with Vulture to help me pull off energy and thoughts that are no longer useful to my clients. This painting came in 2016 as Vulture made herself part of my daily practices and work. It was a particularly vulnerable time for me, and Vulture came in to guide me to the land of the Ancestors and the land of the Dead to connect with my maternal grandfather.
